For just the second time in school history, the Bridgeport football team advanced in the state playoffs with a 70-20 thumping of Alma in a Class D-1 first-round home game lastThursday.
The Bulldogs, who beat Chadron for their only other playoff win back in 1999, improved to 7-2 with their seventh straight victory. Bridgeport will now go on the road to face third-seeded Crofton (9-0) in a second-round playoff game on Friday at 2 p.m. Crofton beat Tri County 60-8 in the first round.
After an early 6-6 tie in the opening quarter, Bridgeport went on to dominate Alma by outscoring the Cardinals 64-14 the rest of the way. Like has been the case all season, the Bulldogs were led by senior running back Peyton Abbott. He rushed for 258 yards on 25 carries and totaled seven touchdowns to tie that particular school record for the second time this year.
