Bridgeport Girl Scouts teamed up with the Morrill County Community Hospital Clinical Laboratory Department one afternoon last week to become scientists for the day.The group gathered at the hospital’s training center on Main Street on Tuesday after school, and all donned lab coats and protective goggles.
After a brief introduction between scientists, the lab staff each spoke for a few minutes on what their job at the hospital laboratory entailed. They talked about how their team studies germs, and how they diagnose illnesses from looking through a microscope at blood and other specimens. Each girl was able to look through the high-powered microscope lens at germs on a slide.
The laboratory department, through a grant from the American Society of Clinical Pathology, provided each girl with The Lab Drawer Kit, a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math activity, often referred to as STEAM.The Lab Drawer Kit contains everything needed to do the experiment in that particular kit.
