City considers changes to ordinance dealing with vegetation growth near intersections on first reading

A proposal to modify Bridgeport city code was considered by the city council Tuesday evening on first reading. The existing code states that the owner or occupant of any lot or piece of ground within the city limits or within the city’s one-mile zoning jurisdiction shall keep the lot or piece of ground and adjoining street and alley free of any growth of eight inches or more in height of weeds, grasses, or worthless vegetation.

The proposed amendment would define “any growth of eight inches” to include any and all growth that exists within 25 feet of any intersecting street. Growth that existed within 25 feet of any intersecting street prior to the passage of this ordinance would be grand fathered. However, the city reserves the right to identify any growth, whether existing before or after adoption of the proposed ordinance, regardless of height, which may be considered to be a threat to the safety of persons or property, and have that growth removed.

The council also considered and adopted on final passage, waiving the three reading rule, Ordinance 1003 that vacated that portion of J Street that lies north of west 4th Street.
