The Bridgeport Girl Scouts went on a field trip last Tuesday when they took a tour of the Bridgeport News-Blade and printing shop. Several girls and their parents took the opportunity to learn about the old-fashioned machines and see the original darkroom, where News-Blade staff developed film prior to the digital age.
The girls learned how the newspaper is put together today via computers. They viewed several print shop antiques, and tied each other’s hands together with the string machine. They saw how giant posters are made and browsed in the shop. They also watched the giant 1890’s paper cutter cut down giant sheets of paper, guillotine style. They used the numbering machine to put numbers on duplicate forms and viewed the newspaper archives for the past 120 years.
The scouts were amazed with all the paper that is stacked floor to ceiling and were surprised at how big the space was inside. They especially liked the old machines and the fact that they’re still being used today.
