Discussion of vegetation growth near street intersections dominates city council meeting

Council decides to return to Thursday meetings

The main topic of discussion at the Bridgeport City Council meeting on Tuesday was the proposed amendment to the ordinance dealing with vegetation growth near intersections. Numerous concerned citizens were in attendance.

Bridgeport Tree Board member Susan Myers expressed concerns on behalf of the board and Crissy Land,Western Community Forester with the Nebraska Forest Service. They believe the amendment could impact existing and future street trees and requested that the Tree Board have the opportunity to review the amendment and provide language to clarify the intent and minimize negative impacts on street trees.

Other speakers stated concerns regarding the language“ within 25 feet of any intersecting street,” and whether the 25 feet is measured from the curb or the center of the intersection. There were also concerns about how the ordinance will be enforced. Citizens present requested a public meeting to discuss this proposed amendment. The proposed ordinance was tabled until a future meeting.
