Heartbreak boys all bound for state

Four Bridgeport boys gave it all they had in the Heartbreaker round of the Nebraska State Athletic Association Class D district 4 wrestling tournament held at Sutherland over the weekend.

Freshman Zach Jeffords, senior Chase McGrath and juniors Harrison Barnette and Peyton Abbott all fought and won the most stressful round, extending their season and earning a spot on the mat in the state championship at Omaha tomorrow.

Wrestling at 113-lbs., Jeffords wrestled Brownell of Sutherland, pinning him in 3:24 before falling to Devitt of Hitchcock County. Jeffords fought next against Wellnitz of Hay Springs and won with an 8-5 decision before falling to Garden County’s Gardner in a 1:31 pin. Jeffords ended in fourth place on the podium.
