The Leyton girls track and field team claimed the Class D, District 9 championship last week in Chappell. Leyton finished on top with a total of 88 points.

In winning the title, five individuals qualified to compete at the state meet for the Leyton girls. State competition will be held Friday and Saturday at Burke Stadium in Lincoln.The fabulous five representing the Warriors at state will be Zaili Benish, Shawnee Gamble, Riley Jones, Macey Roelle, and Claire Watchorn. All five combined to power the team to the district title.

Benish swept the district titles in the hurdles. She won the 100s in a time of 16.77 seconds and cruised to a first-place finish in the 300s in 48.01. Benish, a junior, won a state title in the 300 hurdles last year as a sophomore. Gamble will also be competing at state in a pair of individual events. She won the district title in the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.11. She also finished second in the 200 in 28.29.
