Reflection and remembrance

Editor’s note:These remarks were given by Alexis Corman at the Bridgeport Memorial Day service.

“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.” James A. Garfield said this on May 30, 1868. 156 years later and still we gather together to remember their patriotism.

Today we remember in different ways. Just like the original name, Decoration Day, some of us visit graves to decorate them with flowers, wreaths, and flags. Others may visit a monument or park.We may attend a parade, be with family or enjoy the outdoors. We may do all of these things.
