The Nebraska Nurse Honor Guard inducted members into their new Panhandle Area chapter on August 17.
Founder Deb Zobel introduced the honor guard, a nonprofit comprised of active and retired nurses in Nebraska that aims to honor and serve nurses across Nebraska through funeral honors and living tributes. They have attended 567 funeral or memorial services since their start in November 2019. Honor guard services include a reciting of the Florence Nightingale Pledge, the placing of a white rose on the casket or urn signifying the nurse’s devotion to their profession, as well as the awarding of a nursing lamp to a living representative of the deceased. The lamp represents comfort, kindness, courage, and an unwavering devotion to duty that will shine far into the future. The guard has a nurse honor wall on their website at www.nebraskanursehonorguard. org The living tributes are a special opportunity to recognize the achievements of nurses on hospice or over the age of 90.The guard does a special tribute line. They present the honoree with a large bouquet of flowers and let them talk about their nursing career.
The guard also emphasizes the importance of preserving nursing history and community involvement.
