Nik Weibert’s return to the lineup was exactly the boost the Bridgeport football team needed in picking up its first win of the season last Friday night. After missing a game because of injury,Weibert totaled 414 yards and four touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 64-52 victory over Sandhills Valley. The Bulldogs are now 1-2 going into the district opener against Perkins County on Friday in Grant.
Weibert, a junior quarterback, showed no rust from sitting out a week as he completed 17 of his 26 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran 18 times for 157 yards. The Bulldogs needed about all of his impressive offensive output as the pesky Mavericks rallied to remain within striking distance in the second half.
After Bridgeport built a commanding 4214 lead at halftime, Sandhills Valley scored on five straight possessions in the second half to close back within 12 on a couple of occasions. However, the Mavericks would get no closer as the Bulldogs continued to have an answer with an explosive offense that piled up a total of 542 yards in the contest.
