Warriors claim sub-district title

The Leyton girls basketball team rolled to the championship of the Class D-2, Sub-district 11 tournament held last week in Dalton.

After beating Creek Valley 78-21 in the semifinals, theWarriors topped Garden County 63-22 to claim the title. Leyton will take a 21-2 record into the D2-8 district final against Anselmo-Merna (19-5) on Friday in North Platte.Tip off is set for 5 p.m. at North Platte St. Patrick’s High School. The winner will advance to the state tournament in Lincoln.

Three Warriors scored in double figures in the sub-district final. Zaili Benish led the way with 22 points. Shawnee Gamble followed with 15 and Kaydence Haupt had 10. Ella Haley and Sydney Fortune finished with eight points each. Benish ignited for 37 points with seven 3-pointers in Leyton’s semifinal win over Creek Valley. She also handed out eight assists and collected six steals. Gamble finished with 19 points, six rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Fortune scored eight points, grabbed six boards, and had four steals. Haupt handed out seven assists and led the Warriors with eight steals.
