State bound speakers from Bridgeport gave a special performance on Monday night in the high school auditorium; the widely talented group performed before a fair-sized crowd, who could be heard laughing one minute and brought to tears the next.
A baker’s dozen of Bridgeport speechies, as they are affectionately called, are in Kearney today for the highly competitive class C1 event, competing in eleven events plus one in the open division. Each of the Bridgeport seniors made state in at least one event. Logan Bartling earned the spot in extemporaneous while Drew Leisy, Tegan Rice, Jordan Wagner, and Claire Linders earned spots in two events each, the maximum allowed to compete at the district and state level.
While some events are scripted out initially, students take bits and pieces of it to build a script that fits their team or individual event. Informative and entertainment speeches are written entirely by the student and change over the course of the year as needed. Extemporaneous speakers learn their topic one hour before giving their speech in front of the judges.Topics range from political events to world history and others.
