Flag retirement ceremony added to County Government Day

Seniors from Bridgeport and Bayard High School spent last Tuesday at the Morrill County Courthouse for some hands-on lessons about county government. Students spent the morning touring the several offices inside the courthouse: the county and district clerk’s offices, the assessor office, the veteran’s office, and the election office. They also saw big equipment and met with men from the road department. In the veteran’s office, retired military members walked students through proper flag folding and had them try their hands at it.

Following lunch, students were led in a flag retirement ceremony by the Sons of the American Legion. The rites were read, and the flag burned in a fire pit on the lawn of the courthouse.

To conclude the day, students sat in the district courtroom for a mock trial with the Honorable Andrea Miller presiding. Attorneys present to help with the event were County Attorney Kirk Fellhoelter and Defense Attorney Audrey Long. This annual Morrill County tradition dates back several decades, and always seems to amaze the students at just exactly what goes on behind the courthouse doors.
