The month of April is National Autism Awareness month. Every year, Autism Speaks celebrates the month with World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. People share their stories and connect to create unity and a more inclusive world.
I, Lars Strawn, whom many of you may know, have Asperger’s Syndrome, which is a type of Autism that is no longer diagnosed as a condition itself, but is officially known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Sensory issues are common with people with autism and I also have sensory process disorder (SPD), but you can have one and not the other.
Autism is not a disease of any kind, although it is often perceived as one, and there is no known cause. It is not because of bad parenting or vaccines, but is rather a neurobiological disorder in childhood brain development.
