“Khumbaya” reverberated off the walls inside Heckman Auditorium at Doane University in Crete on Monday night with four Bridgeport students singing along with the Honor Choir there. In front of a standing-room-only audience, Drew Leisy, Kaitlynn Moore, Delaney Pohl, and Eden Strawn participated in singing five pieces to the packed crowd.

Under the directorship of Kurt Runestad, and accompanied by Lisa Ulmer on piano, the 200-member choir from 54 different schools of all classes around the state sang “The Last Words of David” by Randall Thompson, “Bogoroditse Djevo” by Rachmaninoff, “Khumbaya,” the popular gosptel piece, arranged by Kurt Runestad, “Glow” by Eric Whitacre, and “Little David, Play onYour Harp,” an old spiritual arranged by Rollo Dilwort.

Prior to taking the stage, the honor students were given a concert of their own with soloists from several area high schools, as well as the Doane Choir performing their Festival Concert. That choir will be in Bridgeport to perform a free concert next Tuesday, January 17, during their annual January Festival tour. See Bridgeport alums Elijah Smith and Lucas Smith in that concert, which will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.
