As luck would have it, Ms. Jill Bartling, who taught 5th grade at Leyton schools last year and had a student recognized in the national publication Scholastic News magazine this past December, has done it again. This year in her new position as one of Bridgeport’s 5th grade teachers, Ms. Bartling had another student recognized in the publication, this time in the April edition and featuring Julia Basa.
Bridgeport Public Schools proudly recognizes fifth-grader Julia Basa, who was honored with an opinion in the national magazine, Scholastic News. Her featured op-ed is an answer to the question, “Which is better: Winter or Summer?” Basa’s opinion was that summer was better and she listed several reasons. In her opinion, summer is “a time to relax and take a break from the stress of the school year.” She noted there is more flexibility in your summer schedule for different activities and you can have picnics or go on vacations. She thinks the weather is “perfect for exercising outside,” and she enjoys the warmth of the sun, riding her bike and spending time at the beach. Basa also noted that experts believe sunshine is good for mental health, and therefore, makes summer the better choice of season.
According to their website, over six million students read Scholastic News every week, as they publish individual weekly magazines for each elementary grade, a joint edition for middle schoolers, and another one for 9-12th graders, among others.
