Students from Bridgeport High School put on their spring play two weeks ago, the final high school production for seniors Claire Linders and Drew Leisy, who have been acting side-byside since their elementary days in the Lions Club talent shows.
This year the high schoolers put on a melodrama titled, “Millie Monka and the Salmon Cannery Or…There’s Something Fishy Going On.”The set takes place in northern Minnesota, where the accent is palpable “dontcha know,” and the characters are, shall we say, just plain odd.The heroine, Millie Monka, is a hardworking, upbeat lady who is just about perfect, running her family’s salmon cannery. But something fishy is going on when all the salmon begin to disappear from the river, and the fate of Monka and all her workers are in dire straits.
Part time evil villain Artie Fischel has taken on a job at the canning factory as a ruse to get to the sunken treasure in the river, and has blocked the salmon from entering it. Attempting to drive the cannery out of business and scab onto the deed so he and his equally evil girlfriend, Gladys Canby, can live large for the rest of their lives, Fischel keeps up his Jekyll and Hyde demeanor until the time is right.
