Benish brings home the gold in huge upset

Burke Stadium was the site of the Nebraska State Athletic Association State Track Meet on May 19-20th, with both Bridgeport and Leyton sending contestants, the Bulldogs in Class C, and the Warriors in Class D.

Zaili Benish, sophomore competing for Leyton in the women’s division, took the Championship from Macy Richardson of Sterling in the last 0.3 seconds of the 300-meter hurdles race. Richardson, a three-time champion in the 100m hurdles, who also won gold her sophomore year in the 300m hurdles, and settled for silver last year, was heavily favored to win and was ahead by a long shot in the final 100 meters of the race. When Richardson sensed that Benish was breathing down her neck in the final seconds, she attempted to secure her spot for first with a dive over the finish line, barely missing out on the gold.

Benish, in her second year on the varsity track team, ran the race in 46.00 seconds, a personal best for her. Her time set the school record for Leyton.
