County valuation hot topic at commissioners meeting

Million dollar grant signed by governor for fairgrounds

Several community members were present at the Morrill County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday morning, concerned about the valuation increases across the county. Chairman Jeff Metz started the meeting by addressing the issue, explaining that currently, Morrill County does not meet the state statute requirement of residential properties being at 100% of market value. The blanket increases brings our county back into compliance with the state. The Tax Equalization Review Commission would have to raise the values for the county if not for this blanket increase.

Each year, every county receives a review by that commission to ensure that all counties are meeting the state statute.

Morrill County Assessor Rose Nelson urges constituents to come speak directly with her about their valuations prior to filing a protest. She cannot do a complete county-wide revaluation in one year. She also urges homeowners ages 65 and older to come talk to her to see if they qualify for the homestead exemption. The homestead exemption application is due June 30 in the assessor’s office.
