Marilyn Vassos, 84
Marilyn Vassos, 84
Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, First Baptist Church or Friends of the Library in Bridgeport.
Marilyn was born October 1, 1940 to loving parents, Lawrence and Aletha Woznick, in Scotia, NE. At the age of 2, she moved to Bridgeport with her family where she lived her entire lifetime. She graduated from Bridgeport High School and worked for the Morrill County Extension Service upon graduation.
She was united in marriage to the love of her life, James, on October 29, 1960, and their life was blessed with three daughters. Marilyn loved being a stay-at-home mom until her daughters entered school. She worked at the Bridgeport Public Schools for 36 years and was the first para-professional in the school system. Helping a child learn brought much joy to her heart, and a motto she lived by was, “to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded” (Ralph Emerson). Marilyn was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 25 years and served on various boards, as well as was a choir member. She served as a Girl Scout leader and was president of the Firemen’s Axillary.
Marilyn’s most cherished times were spent with her husband taking motorcycle trips and fishing for trout at the state lakes, as well as time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren (a/k/a “Sugarbabes”). She loved to plan family vacations and fun times in her home where she was known as “Granny” by all. Her hobbies were many: baking chocolate chip cookies and apple pies, knitting items for Knit for Kids, flower/gardening, and reading, to name a few. She also like to memorize poems and Scripture, with her favorite being Phil 4:4-7. She especially appreciated her quiet devotional time daily with God in the early dawn of a new day.
Although she didn’t have a lot of certificates on the wall or trophies in a case, she left her loved ones a legacy of love, faith, gentleness and compassion for others.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, James; daughters Robyn (late Ken) Pledger of Scottsbluff, Jammie (Dick) Hadden of Bridgeport and Trayce (Rick) Nenow of Jamestown, ND; grandchildren Cami Wegelin of Scottsbluff, Cassie (Grant) Martin of Scottsbluff, Levi (Kenzie Sebastian) Nenow of Jamestown, ND, Natalie (Taryn) Wood of Hemingford, NE and Katie Nenow of Jamestown, ND; great-grandchildren Everly and Brecken Wood (twins), James Tanata and Ava Martin; siblings Virginia Haubold of Grand Island, Jim Woznick of Bridgeport and Carole Amateis of Lincoln; brother-in-law Tom (Sheila) Vassos of Florida; also many special nieces and nephews; and neighbors, Taylor and Trey Janicek.
