Richard “Dick” Simmons, 84

Dick was born on January 15, 1941, in Minatare, NE, to Phillip and Edna (Reynolds) Simmons. He attended elementary school in Broadwater and high school in Bridgeport, NE. During his sophomore year, he enlisted in the United States Navy on March 20, 1958, and served until his honorable discharge on April 5, 1963.While in the Navy, he was stationed overseas and achieved the rank of E-2. He had a deep love for his country. On February 7, 1970, Dick married Linda Schuldies in Scottsbluff, NE. Together, they had two children: Robert Joseph and Stacy Renea.
A hard worker throughout his life, Dick was employed at several places, including Panhandle CoOp, Simplot, Walmart,Tiger Paws, and Bayard Grocery. He also worked for a local farmer, always dedicated and committed to his work. Dick had a deep passion for both cars and sports. As a lifelong car enthusiast, he spent countless hours working on his vehicles, attending car shows, and enjoying drag races. His expertise in engines and automobiles was unparalleled.
Sports also played a major role in his life, with Dick being a dedicated fan of both football and baseball, always excited to watch a game or cheer on his favorite teams.
A respected leader in his community, Dick was instrumental in supporting the
Voices of Democracy scholarship program, which helps high school students pursue their educational dreams. His work with the program left a lasting impact on many young lives, as he believed strongly in the power of education and the importance of empowering the next generation.
For several years, Dick served as the Commander of the VFW Post 9915, where he provided leadership, support, and camaraderie to veterans in the area. His service to his country and his dedication to his fellow veterans were central to his character, and his legacy in the VFW will continue to inspire others for years to come.
His greatest blessing was his grandchildren.Whether it was a picture for a school dance, enjoying ice cream together, or having lunch dates, he was always there, making every moment special. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Donny Simmons and Bob Wiggins, and sisters Karen Simmons and Betty Warford.
He is survived by his son Robert (Lisa) Simmons of Gering, NE; daughter Stacy (Patrick) Epling of Corvallis, MT; and grandchildren Elijah Simmons of Hersey, NE, Brayton Simmons and Haven Simmons of Gering, NE, and Jennah, Briella, and Trevin Epling of Corvallis, MT. He is also survived by his sisters Sandy Abel of Scottsbluff, NE; Pat Hutchison of Cheyenne, WY; and his little brother James Simmons of Cibolo,TX.
Dick will also be lovingly remembered by his special extended family, Cindy (Gary) Schanhols of Bayard, NE, along with numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and the community who cherished him. He had a special love for the restaurant Brendal’s, where Brenda, a dear friend, was an important part of his life. His fondness for Brendal’s and the friendships he made there were a source of great joy for him.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on March 15, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bayard Memorial Cemetery Veteran’s circle.
A reception for family and friends will be held immediately following the service at the Bayard American Legion.
