Following high school, Gerry returned to the family farm while Dallas joined the United States Marine Corps and was deployed to Korea. Upon his return from the Korean War, Dallas took a job in Rapid City, South Dakota, but made regular trips to Broadwater to see Gerry. They were married on June 4, 1955, in Broadwater and then made their home in Rapid City. Their son, Patrick, was born in May of 1956.The family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1961 and that is where they lived for 62 years.
Although they loved Iowa, it was the western Nebraska area that held a special place in their hearts. “Home” to Gerry always meant the family farm south of Broadwater. They made multiple trips every year to spend time with family and friends in the Broadwater/ Bridgeport/Sidney area. They loved attending Bridgeport High School class reunions, and had a great time attending an occasional Cornhuskers football game with classmates George and Ann Williams, Russ and Connie Krieger, Harold and Madelyn Anderson, and others. They subscribed to the News-Blade for decades to keep up to date with what was going on back home.
